Basic Concepts in Supervisory Control

چکیده

of Research Results Research on human interaction with automation in many domains including aviation and anesthesiology has shown that automated systems often fail to function as team players (Norman, 1990; Billings, 1991; 1996; Malin et al., 1991; Sarter and Woods, 1994b). To summarize the data, automated systems that are strong, silent, clumsy, and difficult to direct are not team players. Automated systems are: (a) strong when they can act autonomously; (b) silent when they provide poor feedback about their activities and intentions, (c) clumsy when they interrupt their human partners during high workload, high criticality periods or add new mental burdens during these high tempo periods , and (d) difficult to direct when it is costly for the human supervisor to instruct the automation about how to change as circumstances change. Systems with these characteristics create new problems for their human partners and new forms of system failure.

Recent Developments in Discrete Event Systems

This article is a brief exposure of the process approach to a newly emerging area called "discrete event systems" in control theory and summarizes some of the recent developments in this area. Discrete event systems is an area of research that is developing within the interstices of computer, control and communication sciences. The basic direction of research addresses issues in the analysis an...

Plant Modeling for Human Supervisory Control

The paper provides an overview of Multilevel Flow Modeling (MFM) and its application for design of displays for supervisory control of industrial plant. The problem of designing the information content of supervisory displays is discussed and plant representations like MFM using levels of means-end and part-whole abstractions are proposed as a solution to this design problem. The basic concepts...

Modelling, Synthesis, and Simulation of Supervisory Process Control Systems

Modelling, synthesis, and simulation issues of the supervisory systems in process control are investigated in the paper. Petri nets are used as a basic modelling framework for the supervisory part of the system. It is shown how the final verification effort can be minimised by applying formal synthesis methods. A straightforward approach to the industrial implementation of the developed solutio...

Petri Net Based Supervisory Control of Flexible Batch Plants

The application of supervisory control concepts in the control of batch process plants is investigated in the paper. Supervisory control issues in flexible batch plants include co-ordination, resource allocation and process management. The paper utilises the Petri net based supervisory control framework to develop appropriate solutions. A straightforward approach of translating developed Petri ...

A survey of siphons in Petri nets

Petri nets have gained increasing usage and acceptance as a basic model of asynchronous concurrent systems since 1962. As a class of structural objects of Petri nets, siphons play a critical role in the analysis and control of systems modeled with Petri nets. This paper surveys the state-of-the-art siphon theory of Petri nets including basic concepts, computation of siphons, controllability con...
